Dr. Angela Robinson

Born in the United States, Angela Sakura Robinson began formal piano studies at the age of 7. She was a pupil of Leon Whitesell and Ernestine Scott, the latter with whom she continued to study with until 1992. Ms. Robinson then pursued her musical education at the Mannes College of Music, where she received both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees. In December 2002, she completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. While attaining her degrees, Angela has had the opportunity to study with a number of artists such as Peter Prosser, Stephanie Brown, Paul Tobias, Leon Pommers, Philip Lasser, Noel Lee, Arkady Aronov, and Irina Morozova.
Over the years, Ms. Robinson has upheld a busy teaching schedule. She has been a faculty member of the Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division since 1996. She is currently the Co-Chairman of the Techniques of Music Department at Mannes, where her duties include: overseeing performance workshops, organizing and leading faculty meetings within the department, and restructuring the theory and ear-training curriculum for the entire Preparatory Division (grades kindergarten through twelve). Angela is also on the piano faculty of the Piano School of New York City and the Huntington Music Academy. She was the principal organist and choir director of the Presbyterian Church of Newtown from 2003-2004.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Robinson has also maintained an active performing career in both the United States and abroad. In the States, she has performed as a guest soloist with the Tulsa Philharmonic, Yonkers Symphony Orchestra, and the Forest Sills Symphony. Her most recent engagements include performances at the 92nd Street Y, Gracie Mansion (residence of the Mayor of New York City), the New York Academy of Design, Hubbard Hall (at the Manhattqn School of Music), and the Bal Harbour Convention Center in Miami, Florida. Furthermore, Ms. Robinson has performed a number of solo and chamber recitals in France and Japan, and she has been featured in a Japanese television special (Mirai-Mono) which discusses the lives and careers of young men and women.
Due to Ms. Robinson’s expertise in music education, she has been invited to judge many of the region’s festivals and competitions, including American Fine Arts Festival in Princeton, New Jersey and the Young Pianists’ Honor Recital Auditions (New York State).
