Justin Rothberg
Guitar
Born in Livingston New Jersey, Justin Rothberg began studying the guitar at the age of seven. In high school Justin joined the prestigious Princeton High School Studio Band and won numerous festivals and competitions while in the band. Also during high school he received the Louis Armstrong Award for Musicianship and won the best soloist award at the competition of high school jazz bands. Shortly after entering high school he began studying jazz with renowned guitar and music theory teacher Joe Federico, whom he apprenticed under for four years. After graduating, he spent three years studying privately under first call studio and theater guitarist Tom Giacabetti at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Since relocating to New York in 2001, he has studied under jazz virtuosos Vic Juris and John Patitucci at The City College of New York, for which he received a Bachelors of Music in May 2005. Prior to graduating he was the recipient of The Ivan Gillis Memorial Scholarship for most promising undergraduate music major.
Mr. Rothberg has extensive experience teaching all levels and styles of guitar to many different age groups. As well as teaching privately for the last six years Justin has also taught at the Fraoli School of Music in Greenwich Connecticut, The South Jersey Rhythm Collective in Mount Laurel New Jersey, and the Princeton Music Studio where he first began his lessons at age seven.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Rothberg also has an accomplished performing and recording career in various styles of music. He has completed one tour of Japan and Europe as well as two US tours with the King Django band. He recently returned from European and National tours with Ska/Jazz band Eastern Standard Time. Justin also recorded on albums with King Django and Eastern Standard Time. His original compositions were featured on both of Raw Deal’s Jazz albums, “Raw Deal” and “Encoded”. Justin has also performed with famous acts like Mattisyahu, Tom Waily, Sister Nancy, Sdoun, Zoro, Frank London, and Adam Rogers to name a few.
Mr. Rothberg is currently a member of Raw Deal, Eastern Standard Time, King Django, Sdoun, The Jammyland all-stars, and leads his own group The Justin Rothberg Trio which frequently performs jazz in the New York area. The Trio is scheduled to release their debut album next fall under Version city records.
