Music School Faculty Detail

Kristin Patterson
Piano, Voice, “Piano Toons” Class

Kristin has been teaching piano and voice for over ten years. Most recently she was on the faculty at the International Opera Center of America where she taught piano for singers. Kristin taught both group and private lessons at the MusicTime School in San Francisco, CA where she was best known for her innovative work combining fun activities with learning, creating an excitement for music in many piano and voice students from 18 months through 18 years in age.

Kristin began her piano studies at the age of 3 and her vocal studies at 10. Kristin's most recent success as Florence Pike in the opera Albert Herring was produced by Maestro Lorin Maazel with the London Royal College of Music at Chateauville, VA. The company subsequently replicated some of the opera, in a concert version, with Marvin Hamlisch at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Kristin was first recognized as a youngster with an extraordinary voice. By thirteen, she had developed to a performance level that merited an invitation to tour throughout Germany. Following High School graduation, Kristin received a scholarship to attend Oberlin Conservatory. She completed her Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice Performance at Oberlin and then obtained a Master of Music Degree from San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Among dozens of operatic roles performed by Ms. Patterson, Kristin was especially honored to be chosen as an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera and debuted in the leading role as Miss Baggott in The Little Sweep by Benjamin Britten. In 2007 Kristin toured Italy in a concert production by Il Sempre Magico Baule, the Italian Opera Company based near Milan. Her performances were so successful that she was called back to perform the Pergolesi Stabat Mater with the company which garnered the highest critical acclaim and played to sold out audiences. Kristin returned to her scenes of triumph for a summer 2008 concert tour with La Scala artist Andrea Elena. And, in 2009, performed the title role in Carmen with Maestro Elena directing the performances with the International Opera Center of America.

Kristin is a fun teacher with energy for progression. She is well versed in vocal physiology and music pedagogy and incorporates singing, ear training and listening as well as a variety of other musical skills into her classes. Ms. Patterson designs her lessons in order to awaken the imagination and creativity in each student and ready them for performing, teaching or any other musical direction they should decide to take.
