Steven Denny is an active pianist and educator and was recently selected as one of five finalists for the prestigious 2012 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. He holds a BA in music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. During his time at Loyola, Steven earned a Performance Award for his senior recital and received departmental honors as an Outstanding Music Major. While at UNC, he was a Graduate Assistant with the Jazz Studies Department and a member of UNC Jazz Lab Band I, one of the top collegiate big bands in the country.
In 2008, UNC’s Lab I was awarded “Outstanding Achievement by a Collegiate Big Band” by Downbeat Magazine. Steven has performed with jazz greats Slide Hampton, Stefon Harris, Paul McKee, Paul Warburton, Ken Walker and Al Hood. He is also involved with many musical projects including his own trio, Keyboard Counterpoint with Neil Bridge, the Subterranean Jazz Quartet and Trio Bravo. In March the Steve Denny Trio celebrated the release of their inaugural recording project, Life in the Basement, out on the Dazzle Recordings label. The album features an eclectic array of Steven’s original compositions that bridge the gap between the swinging, spirited feel of familiar jazz standards and the emotive harmonies and complex textures of modern music.
In addition to his active performance schedule Mr. Denny is an experienced educator having taught privately and at Front Range Community College. For over three years Steven was the Music Director at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, Denver’s premiere live music venue. During Steven’s tenure the club was awarded 5280 Magazine’s “Top of the Town” for best live music bar in addition to being recognized as one of the top 150 jazz clubs in the world by Downbeat Magazine for three consecutive years.
