Carlos Barriento is a freelance double bassist, chamber musician and educator in the New York Metropolitan area. Currently, he serves as Principal Double Bass in the New Jersey Festival Orchestra, as well as a member of the Distinguished Concerts International Orchestra and the Music Ministry at the historic Parish of Calvary-St. George’s. Past engagements have included: Metamorphosis, Brooklyn & Washington Heights Chamber Orchestras; Ensemble LPR, the International Contemporary Ensemble, Aeon Ensemble, Mimesis Ensemble, The Orchestra Now, The New Orchestra of Washington, South Florida Symphony, Lancaster Symphony, Glens Falls Symphony, and the Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, among others. Most recently, Mr. Barriento’s playing was featured on the award-winning animated short film, First Light (2020), as well as being credited in the production of the Academy Award-winning short documentary The Only Girl in the Orchestra (2023). As an educator, Mr. Barriento is Professor of Double Bass at Manhattan School of Music Precollege since 2016, frequent guest clinician with the New Jersey Youth Symphony and the All City Orchestra. He has previously served as faculty member of the Opportunity Music Project (an El Sistema-based program) where he created and developed the bass program and Director of Strings for more than a decade at the Fair Lawn Summer Music Enrichment Program (NJ). Additionally, Mr. Barriento founded the Fair Lawn Academy of Music (NJ) in 2018, expanding music education and live professional performances in his home community, and currently serves as Director of the Bergen Academy of Music & Art in Oradell, NJ. Studies include: Orin O’Brien, Linda McKnight, David Grossman, Alla Basis, Lewis Paer, Timothy Cobb and Marji Danilow. Mr. Barriento holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music and Columbia University.
